What the tracker checks when you save

Which problems stop a save, which only warn you, and what to do if someone else changed the record.

Updated 31 October 2026

Every save is checked on the server. Some problems stop the save; others save it and tell you.

When the save is refused

Each message appears beside its field and in a summary under the form: Nothing was saved; what you typed is kept. Select a field's name in the summary to go to it.

You must fix:

  • a required field left empty, or a number out of range;
  • text shorter than its minimum;
  • a decision that is not pending with no rationale;
  • a milestone forecast later than its baseline with no note;
  • an option with nothing in What we give up;
  • a question whose status does not begin with Open or Decided;
  • a reference already used.

When it saves with a warning

The page says Saved, with something worth a look (not blocking) and lists them:

  • a project marked on track with under 10% progress;
  • a pending decision that already has a rationale;
  • a risk with no next action;
  • a high-severity risk whose score is moderate;
  • a milestone whose date has passed but is not marked complete;
  • more than five headline figures.

When someone else has changed it

If another editor saved the same project after you opened it, your save is refused and Someone else has changed this opens. Choose Keep this page to copy what you typed, then Reload the latest version and enter it again. Nothing is ever overwritten without you knowing.
