Getting started with HR

What HR is for, what each access level sees, and where everything is.

Updated 31 October 2026

HR keeps your organisation's workforce record: who works here, in which roles, on what hours, and who manages each role. Everyone uses it to ask for time off, report sickness, and take part in reviews and goals. Managers decide their team's requests, and HR sets up starters, changes and leavers.

Open it

Open HR from the applications menu in the bar at the top, or from Core home. In the sandbox, sign in with the demo login; the Demo menu in the bar lets you see HR as another role.

What you see depends on your access level

Your access level shows beside the HR title. Screens it does not include are not shown.

Access levelWhat it gives you
EmployeeYour own record, leave and sickness, reviews, goals and learning readiness
Line ManagerAs Employee, plus the people and roles you manage: decide their absence, change their shifts, run their reviews, and see their reports
AuditorReads everyone's records, the reports and the audit trail, but not restricted notes or pay costs; changes nothing
HR AdministratorEveryone: starters, changes and leavers, pay agreements, absence for anyone, restricted notes, import and export
HR LeadAs HR Administrator, plus pay costs from Payroll and the settings

The menu

  • My record: your roles, leave, absences, reviews and checklist, and what Training and Payroll hold for you.
  • Inbox: what is waiting for you. The number beside it counts the decisions, review steps, tasks and pay changes waiting.
  • Team calendar: who works when, and who is off, among the people you can see.
  • Goals: the organisation's goals and the goals that support them.
  • People: the directory.
  • Reports: headcount, leave, absence, reviews due and readiness.
  • Payroll and Training: what HR shares with the other workforce applets.
  • Settings and Audit: for the people who run HR.

HR administrators also have a New starter button at the end of the menu.

The bell in the bar tells you when something needs you: a request to decide, a review step, a task, a pay change to approve, approvals delegated to you, or a change to your shift.
